If you’re looking for a simple, healthier twist on hot chocolate that actually supports your skin, mood and overall wellbeing, Lisa Snowdon’s collagen hot chocolate is an easy win. It’s quick to make, tastes rich and comforting, and includes two ingredients that are especially helpful for women during perimenopause and menopause: raw cacao and marine collagen.

“This hot chocolate has become a little daily ritual for me. It tastes gorgeous, but it also gives me something extra — the collagen helps support my skin and joints, and the raw cacao gives me a lift when my energy or mood dips. During menopause, you really notice the difference when you add in things that support your body, and this is such an easy, delicious way to do it.” Lisa Snowdon

Raw cacao provides minerals and mood support, whilst collagen adds protein and benefits skin, hair, and joints — making this more than a cosy drink. It’s a genuinely functional treat. It is naturally low in sugar and contains magnesium and iron, which are excellent for supporting energy, mood and relaxation. It also has antioxidant properties that help keep skin bright and healthy.

Collagen levels naturally drop during perimenopause and menopause. Adding Correxiko Marine Collagen provides easily absorbed peptides that support skin firmness, joint comfort, hair strength and gut health. It blends smoothly into warm drinks, making it an effortless daily supplement for beauty and wellbeing.

Lisa’s Collagen Hot Chocolate Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk of your choice (dairy, plant-based or goat’s milk)
  • 2 tablespoons Correxiko Marine Collagen (this collagen is unflavoured and mixes perfectly with the cocoa to make a creamy drink)
  • 2 heaped teaspoons raw cacao
  • Optional: honey or agave

Method

  1. Warm your milk gently on the hob.
  2. Add 2 x tablespoons of Correxiko marine collagen powder and whisk until dissolved
  3. Stir in 2 x heaped teaspoons of raw cacao
  4. Sweeten lightly, if desired.
  5. Whisk again until creamy and well combined.

Serve warm. It’s rich, chocolatey and takes only a couple of minutes — ideal for mornings, afternoons or anytime you want a nourishing, midlife-friendly treat. I have been making this drink with Correxiko marine collagen for years, and I love it. It’s such an enjoyable and super simple way to experience the benefits of collagen, and it tastes so good.

It’s the not-so-secret secret to glowing skin, supple joints and strong hair: collagen has become the cornerstone of beauty and wellness routines worldwide. Once loved only by bone broth devotees and holistic health circles, this structural protein has taken centre stage in modern supplementation. But just like all supplements, not all collagen is created equal, and knowing how they work, which types matter, and what your body needs to get the most out of it is essential.

We sat down with experts Jo Woodhurst (Director of Nutrition & Education at Ancient + Brave), Dr Jenna Macciochi (Director of Science & Innovation), and Eleanor Hoath (Registered Nutritional Therapist), and looked at the latest research and product launches from leading collagen brands to unravel the science of collagen and discover which type works best for maintaining youthful skin.

What is Collagen and Why Does It Matter for Skin Health?

Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the human body, making up around 30% of total protein. It’s what gives skin its firmness, bounce, and structure. It also supports joints, bones, connective tissue, and even hair follicles.

“Collagen forms a triple-helix matrix that supports skin elasticity, dermal strength, joint cartilage and even hair follicle structure,” explains Dr Macciochi. “As we age, collagen production slows, and environmental and lifestyle factors, like UV damage, inflammation and smoking accelerate its breakdown.”

Eleanor adds: “After the age of 25, the body’s natural collagen production begins to decline. This drop plays a role in the development of fine lines, wrinkles, and that gradual loss of skin elasticity many start to notice in their late twenties and beyond.”

Types of Collagen: What Should You Look For?

There are at least 28 known types of collagen in the body, but Types I, II, and III are the most relevant when we’re focusing on skin and connective tissue:

  • Type I – Found in skin, bones and ligaments; supports firmness and structure.
  • Type II – Present in cartilage; supports joint health.
  • Type III – Found in skin and blood vessels; adds elasticity and plumpness.

When choosing a supplement, look for hydrolysed collagen peptides. This means the protein has been broken down enzymatically into smaller chains (called di- and tri-peptides) for better absorption and bioavailability.

Collagen Brands Making Waves

With collagen’s popularity booming, several pioneering brands are setting the standard with high-quality, research-backed products.

  • Ancient + Brave use both True Collagen (EU-sourced bovine) and Wild Collagen (marine-derived from wild-caught North Atlantic fish). Both contain low-molecular-weight peptides and have been shown in independent trials to be equally effective for improving skin, joint and connective tissue health.
  • Vital Proteins, one of the most recognised names in collagen, recently revealed that while 84% of Brits know what collagen is, only 1 in 10 actually take it. Their research also highlighted widespread myths, from plumper lips to weight loss and breast enhancement, and showed that over half of people wrongly believe collagen isn’t needed until age 55, when in reality production declines from the mid-20s. Their messaging is clear: don’t wait until the signs of aging show – start supporting your collagen earlier.
  • Bare Biology has launched Fundamental, a new Swiss-made bovine collagen combining both Type I and Type III. This formula directly supports skin’s structure and elasticity, making it a strong choice for those seeking visible improvements in firmness and plumpness.
  • Ape Nutrition take a holistic approach, rooted in a nose-to-tail ethos. Their collagen is hot and cold soluble, odourless, and flavourless, making it versatile for everything from smoothies to soups, while also championing the idea of using the whole animal for optimal nourishment.
  • Dr Seaweed have created a unique double-duty formula blending 5000mg of premium MSC-certified marine collagen with their iodine-rich PureSea® Protect seaweed. Thanks to the EFSA-approved health claims attached to iodine, it’s the only UK collagen brand that can legally claim proven benefits for skin health, hair growth and strong nails – combining collagen with natural micronutrients for enhanced efficacy.
  • Correxiko place a strong emphasis on purity and potency. With a range consisting of both marine and bovine collagen,  free from fillers, flavourings and sweeteners – appealing to those who want clean, clinical-grade formulations. Correxiko also highlights higher-dose collagen servings, designed for those seeking faster or more noticeable results.

Collagen in the Modern Diet: Why It’s Needed More Than Ever

Modern diets, focused on ‘lean’ cuts of meat, often miss out on the collagen-rich parts of animals (skin, cartilage, bones). This has led to a drop in collagen intake compared to ancestral diets.

“Simmering bone broth for 12 hours is wonderful, but not practical for everyone,” says Jo Woodhurst. “That’s where supplementation steps in. Collagen peptides can be stirred into your morning coffee or smoothie, creating a simple and sustainable daily habit. It’s ancestral nutrition, reimagined for the modern world.”

The Role of Vitamin C, Diet & Lifestyle in Collagen Production

Collagen doesn’t work in isolation; it needs supporting nutrients and lifestyle habits to truly thrive. “Your body can’t make collagen effectively without vitamin C,” explains Eleanor. “It’s a vital cofactor in collagen synthesis. That’s why foods like citrus fruits, red peppers and leafy greens are so important.”

Collagen is only found in animal tissue, so while plant-based blends may support collagen formation, they don’t contain collagen peptides themselves. “Let’s be clear,” Eleanor notes, “there is no vegan source of collagen. What’s marketed as vegan collagen is actually a mix of co-factors like vitamin C, silica, and antioxidants. Useful? Yes. But not collagen.”

The Sugar-Collagen Connection

One of the lesser-discussed disruptors of collagen is sugar. Specifically, refined sugar and processed carbohydrates. “High sugar intake accelerates a process called glycation, where sugar molecules bind to collagen fibres, making them stiff, brittle, and more prone to breakage,” explains Eleanor. “This weakens skin structure and leads to premature ageing.”

When Will You See Results?

While results vary depending on lifestyle, genetics and health status, consistent use of collagen peptides tends to produce noticeable changes over time.

  • 6 weeks – often the initial gut health improvements
  • 8 weeks – a noticeable enhancement of skin hydration and elasticity
  • 3–6 months – joint and connective tissue feels replenished
  • 12+ months – bone density and structural improvements

Ancient + Brave’s BECOME Study, an independent 12-week clinical trial, found meaningful improvements in skin, hair, nails, energy, sleep and recovery in participants who took their True Collagen daily. Similarly, clinical studies across the category confirm that hydrolysed collagen peptides improve skin moisture, reduce wrinkles and enhance elasticity when taken consistently.

Which Collagen Is Right for You?

Whether you choose marine or bovine collagen often comes down to personal preference. Marine collagen is prized for its smaller peptide size (slightly faster absorption) and suitability for pescatarians, while bovine collagen (often Type I and III) is a great all-rounder for skin and connective tissue.

  • For science-backed skin and hair claims, Dr Seaweed stands out.
  • For everyday, versatile use with a strong potency, Ape Nutrition offers practicality and purity.
  • For a focus on firmness and elasticity, Bare Biology’s Fundamental is ideal.
  • For mainstream accessibility and education, Vital Proteins lead the way.
  • And for sustainably sourced, clinically effective peptides, Ancient + Brave remain a trusted choice.

The Final Word: Youthful Skin Starts Within

Collagen isn’t a miracle, but it is a powerful ally in your long-term skin and wellness strategy. Combined with a nutrient-rich diet, balanced lifestyle, and mindful skincare, collagen supplementation can help restore what time and modern life gradually take away.

“When something ancient works so well in a modern context, we know we’re onto something,” says Jo Woodhurst. For many, that modern ritual begins with a scoop of collagen in their morning cup – and ends with glowing skin that radiates from within.

By Health Writer Charlotte Dormon

I never thought the day would come when I could walk into a French Bistro, confidently order a plate of Fromage or enjoy a frothy latte, and not end up paying for it with a day of bloating headaches and horrid belching. Yet, here I am, living my best foodie life – thanks to one game-changing addition to my morning routine: marine collagen.

Yes, collagen. The youth-boosting supplement you always hear about for glowing skin and healthy hair turns out to be the unsung hero of gut health. I never thought something so simple as adding a scoop of collagen to my coffee – which I initially purchased to ward off midlife wrinkles and help my hair grow – would finally allow me to enjoy foods I had spent over a decade diligently avoiding.

The Gut Health Struggle Is Real

Let me take you back to my pre-collagen days. My gut and I had a tumultuous relationship. Cheese? No chance. Creamy Gelato, I don’t think so! Dairy was my sworn enemy, and eating anything creamy and indulgent like a panna cotta or creamy mashed potato meant suffering the consequences of bloating, headaches, and the sense that my body was staging a rebellion.

For years, I blamed my sensitive digestive system. I avoided the foods I loved and resigned myself to free-from, relatively unappealing, and limited vegan cheese options. Travelling was especially tough. France, with its creamy cheeses and decadent desserts, was a no-go for the sake of my stomach. Italy, forget it. I had to deal with food FOMO everywhere I went, always watching jealousy as my friends or boyfriends happily devoured delightful dairy-filled dishes whilst I had to say no or pay the consequences.

Like many women hitting their 40s, I initially committed to a collagen routine to revive my midlife skin. I’d seen enough research to know its benefits in helping skin elasticity, fine lines, and hydration, so I was prepared to make my new supplement a daily habit. I just wasn’t prepared for what happened next.

A Scoop a Day Keeps the Bloating Away

The changes started subtly. I’d been adding a scoop of collagen to my morning coffee every day, religiously, for about six months when I realised something amazing: my bloating was easing. Meals that used to leave me feeling like my stomach was a balloon about to pop were suddenly not a big deal.

I did a little digging (because I’m a health writer, after all), and it turns out collagen isn’t just a skin saviour, it’s also a gut healer. Our digestive system is lined with a thin barrier called the intestinal wall, which can get damaged from stress, poor diet, or intolerances. Collagen, rich in amino acids like glycine and proline, helps repair that barrier, making your gut stronger and more resilient. It also supports the production of stomach acid and enzymes, which are crucial for breaking down food properly. In layman’s terms, marine collagen gave my digestive system the TLC it desperately needed.

Life After Collagen: Travel, Decadent Dessert, and Cheese Is Back on the Menu!

Fast-forward to a year later, and I feel like a whole new person. Gone are the days of scrutinising menus for dairy-free options or bringing my oat or almond milk with me when I stay with friends or family. Now, I can enjoy foods I had said no to for years and can now say yes to the odd cheese board, ice cream, and creamy desserts if I want to without feeling awful afterwards.

Travel is a delight. France, Italy, and anywhere with a love affair with dairy has become my playground. I no longer fear food. Last year, I travelled to France for the first time in years, and also to the Italian island Sardinia twice, where I could feel part of the action, trying local cheeses and tasting dishes I would have restricted before. Although I still eat many dairy-free alternatives at home, such as oat milk in smoothies and coconut oil for frying, it’s just so freeing to have a choice, and as and when I want to enjoy a bit of butter on my toast, jacket potato or scrambled eggs, I can.  This has also made life so much easier and more exciting for me when dining out and travelling.

And yes, my skin is glowing even more than before, thanks to the collagen and coffee morning routine. Friends and strangers alike have commented on the appearance of my skin and how well I look, which is a huge bonus. But honestly, the real win is my gut. Feeling good on the inside makes everything on the outside shine brighter, too.

Why Marine Collagen?

I’ve stuck with Correxiko Marine Collagen in my coffee daily, as it has no sugar, sweetener or artificial ingredients that may upset the gut microbiome. It’s made from wild-caught fish, a cleaner, higher-quality source of collagen. It blends seamlessly into my coffee (no fishy taste, I promise!) and doesn’t disrupt my morning routine.

Consistency is key, and I’ve learned that, like with any health practice, sticking to it daily makes all the difference, especially when it is as easy as this one, with huge benefits.

I always advise people to get checked by a GP or a gastroenterologist to ensure there are no underlying health issues. Once that is done, if you’ve been battling gut issues, feel restricted by your diet, or want to take better care of your skin, gut, and overall health, try collagen. This simple health habit could be all you need to feel better.

As a gut health doctor, I’m often asked what supplement I recommend above all others to tackle gut health issues. Without hesitation, I always say marine collagen peptides. Why? In my years of research and experience, I’ve seen firsthand how this powerful natural food supplement can help transform gut health for women and men of all ages.

Why Gut Health is So Important

Your gut is at the core of your overall health. It’s not just responsible for digestion and effective nutrient absorption; it impacts your immune system, mood, energy levels, and skin health. For women, especially in their mid-thirties and beyond, gut health can become more challenging due to fluctuating hormones, stress, and the natural ageing process. This is especially relevant for women during their perimenopausal and menopausal years, as our nutritional needs change so much during this time. By supporting the complex structure of your gut architecture with marine collagen, you help ensure your body gets the support it needs to thrive.

How Marine Collagen Peptides Supports Gut Health

Collagen is often associated with skin and hair health, but its benefits for the gut are just as profound. Our gut lining comprises cells held together by a collagen matrix, and maintaining the integrity of this lining is critical for optimal digestion and absorption of nutrients. Marine collagen peptides are derived from the collagen found in fish and are a rich source of amino acid peptides that help repair and strengthen the tissues in our body, including the gut lining. Here’s how they work to keep your gut in optimal health:

1. Repairing and Strengthening the Gut Lining

The gut lining is a barrier that controls what enters your bloodstream from your digestive system. Over time, this barrier can weaken due to stress, diet, or inflammation, leading to a “leaky gut.” When this happens, toxins and undigested food particles can leak into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation and various health problems. Marine collagen peptides provide key amino acids like glycine, proline, and glutamine, which help repair and strengthen the collagen matrix that supports the gut lining. Restoring the integrity of your gut barrier reduces the risk of leaky gut, digestive discomfort, and inflammation, leading to a healthier digestive system overall.

Collagen peptides also contribute to the regeneration of the mucosal barrier in the gut that protects the gut lining. The mucosal barrier is the first line of defence of the gut lining and constantly needs to undergo repair due to the harsh digestive environment.

2. Reducing Gut Inflammation

Many women experience gut inflammation from stress, food sensitivities, or hormonal shifts. Chronic inflammation can cause bloating, gas, and digestive issues and also affects one’s ability to absorb nutrients properly. Marine collagen is rich in glycine, an anti-inflammatory amino acid that helps reduce inflammation, to soothe the gut lining. Incorporating marine collagen peptides into your daily routine can help calm inflammation, making your gut more efficient and comfortable. This results in fewer digestive disruptions, less bloating, and an overall feeling of lightness and well-being.

3. Supporting a Healthy Gut Microbiome

Your gut microbiome—the ecosystem of bacteria and microorganisms in your digestive system—is essential for good health. These bacteria help with digestion, nutrient absorption, and even hormone regulation. This is particularly important for women as hormonal fluctuations can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut, leading to digestive issues.

Recent studies (read here) have shown that Marine collagen peptides are a prebiotic source for the gut microbiota supporting good bacteria to thrive and to generate fermentation products which can reduce symptoms associated with metabolic diseases.

4. Enhancing Nutrient Absorption

When your gut is healthy, it can absorb nutrients more effectively. If your gut lining is compromised, your body may struggle to absorb essential vitamins and minerals, leading to deficiencies that affect your energy, skin, and overall health.

Marine collagen peptides help heal and strengthen the gut lining, ensuring that your digestive system functions at its best, allowing you to absorb more nutrients from the foods you eat and the supplements you take.

The amino acids in collagen also support the production of digestive enzymes, improving the breakdown and absorption of nutrients.

Next Steps. Make Marine Collagen Part of Your Daily Routine

The benefits of marine collagen peptides for gut health are profound, and consistency is key. Making marine collagen a part of your daily routine can strengthen your gut, improve nutrient absorption, reduce inflammation, and support your overall well-being. Whether you’re dealing with digestive issues, seeking to optimise your health, or simply looking for a way to age gracefully from the inside out, marine collagen peptides are the one supplement that can make a significant difference.

How to add collagen peptides to your diet: Try Correxiko Marine Collagen powder. Simply add it to smoothies, water, tea, coffee, and so much more.

Unlike many other collagen supplements, Correxiko’s marine collagen is sourced from wild-caught, sustainably harvested fish from pristine waters. We never use farmed fish, which can be exposed to toxins and heavy metals. This ensures that you’re getting the purest, cleanest collagen available. Our marine collagen peptides are also hydrolysed, meaning they’re broken down into smaller particles for easier absorption by your body. This makes it more effective at repairing and supporting your gut lining compared to less refined collagen supplements.

Correxiko’s marine collagen is completely flavourless and odourless, making it easy to incorporate into your daily routine. Whether you mix it into your coffee, smoothie, or even water, it blends seamlessly and provides all the benefits without disrupting your daily habits.

Curious about collagen and its benefits? In this edition of “Ask An Expert,” we’ve gathered your most common collagen questions and enlisted Dr Dinuk Dissanayake, a former NHS specialist gastroenterologist and now founder of Correxiko, to unveil the hows, whys and whats of taking collagen. From uncovering its benefits for things like gut health and menopause to its effect on skin health and how to choose which supplement will work best for you, find out everything you need to know to boost your collagen knowledge and support your wellbeing.

What are the benefits of taking collagen?
Many visible signs of ageing, such as fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, dry skin, weak hair, brittle nails, joint pain, weak bones, and poor gut health, are often associated with a deficiency in collagen. While ageing is a natural process, the decline in collagen levels can be accelerated by external factors such as excessive sugar intake, alcohol consumption, smoking, and pollution. Stress and a diet high in processed foods can also contribute to collagen damage. Taking collagen peptides helps stimulate the production of new collagen, which can reverse the effects of ageing and alleviate these symptoms.

What is the difference between collagen in gummies, powder, or liquid?
Collagen supplements are available in different forms, including powder, gummies, and liquid, but the active ingredient in all of them is the same—collagen peptides. Collagen powder contains pure collagen peptides, whereas gummies and flavoured liquids often contain added sugars, synthetic flavourings, sweeteners, and artificial colouring, which may cause inflammation. Many people are now aware of ultra-processed foods, and these types of supplements could be considered ultra-processed as well. In terms of cost, gummies and flavoured liquid collagen are generally more expensive per serving than unflavoured collagen powder, with an additional cost of around 80p to £1.00 per day.

At what age should I begin taking a collagen supplement?
Collagen is essential throughout all stages of life, but its decline becomes more noticeable in our late 30s and 40s. At this stage, many people begin to notice the early signs of ageing, such as wrinkles, skin changes, and physical symptoms like joint pain, fatigue, and longer recovery times after exercise. While it’s never too late to start taking collagen, starting earlier can help build up reserves, which is particularly important for women, who lose a significant proportion of collagen during menopause. Even those in their 70s, 80s, and 90s can benefit from collagen supplements as it helps combat accelerated ageing at that stage of life.

Are there any lifestyle factors that reduce collagen production?
Yes, several lifestyle factors can negatively affect collagen production. Excessive exposure to the sun (UV radiation), smoking, alcohol consumption, and a poor diet—especially one high in sugar and low in antioxidants or protein—can lead to collagen depletion. Chronic stress, poor sleep, pollution, a sedentary lifestyle, rapid weight loss, and excessive exercise, such as endurance running, also contribute to collagen loss. Many athletes take high doses of collagen to support endurance and prevent injury.

How long does it take to see the benefits of collagen supplementation?
The timeframe for seeing results from collagen supplementation can vary depending on factors such as lifestyle, but with a high-quality collagen supplement, most people notice improvements in their skin within 1-2 weeks. Nails may strengthen within 3-4 weeks, and hair growth typically improves after 2-3 months. Internally, you may experience benefits such as reduced joint stiffness, improved mobility, stronger gut health, increased energy, and enhanced immunity over time. The longer you take collagen, the more benefits you’ll notice.

Can taking collagen help with gut health?
Yes, collagen can significantly benefit gut health. It helps strengthen the gut lining, particularly through amino acids like glutamine, which promote the regeneration of damaged tissue. This can help prevent “leaky gut,” where toxins and bacteria pass through the intestinal wall, causing chronic inflammation. Collagen peptides also have anti-inflammatory properties, reducing gut inflammation and symptoms associated with conditions like IBS. Additionally, collagen supports digestive health by enhancing stomach acid production, improving nutrient absorption, and promoting a balanced microbiome.

Can I take collagen to support perimenopause?
Yes, collagen offers many benefits during perimenopause. The drop in oestrogen levels during this time leads to decreased collagen production, which can result in thinning skin, wrinkles, and joint discomfort. Collagen supplements help restore skin elasticity, reduce joint pain, and maintain bone density, which is crucial as bone loss accelerates during perimenopause. Collagen also supports hair and nail strength, gut health, muscle mass, and even mood and sleep, making it an essential supplement during this phase of life.

Can I heat collagen?
Yes, collagen peptides are heat-stable and can be added to hot drinks or baked goods without losing their effectiveness. There’s a misconception that collagen denatures when heated, but this only applies to collagen as a protein. Collagen supplements, however, consist of collagen peptides, which remain stable when exposed to heat, allowing you to mix them into hot beverages or bake them into foods like bread, biscuits, and granola.

What does double hydrolysed mean?
Double hydrolysed collagen refers to collagen peptides that have undergone two rounds of hydrolysis, a process that breaks down collagen protein into smaller peptides. The second hydrolysis results in more uniformly smaller peptides, which are more easily absorbed and provide faster, more effective results. Compared to single hydrolysed collagen, double hydrolysed peptides offer enhanced benefits, making a 10g serving of double hydrolysed collagen more potent than the same amount of single hydrolysed collagen.

Can I take collagen long-term?
Yes, collagen is a natural protein and can be taken long-term, much like any other protein. However, it’s important to choose a high-quality product that doesn’t contain sugars, synthetic sweeteners, or additives, as these can cause chronic inflammation if consumed over time. Correxiko collagen, for example, contains pure collagen peptides from fish skin and is safe and effective for daily use to replenish collagen in the diet.

What’s the difference between taking collagen powder versus pills?
The primary difference between collagen powder and pills is the serving size. Collagen powder allows for larger servings (typically 10,000mg per serving), whereas capsules or pills only contain around 500mg of collagen each. This means that to match the effectiveness of the powder, you’d need to take around 20 capsules per day. Capsules also often contain additives, so it’s important to check the ingredient list and choose a product free from unnecessary additives.

Will collagen help my arthritis?
Yes, collagen can be beneficial for arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, which results from the loss of bone density and cartilage. Collagen peptides support joint health by aiding in the repair and maintenance of cartilage, reducing joint pain, and improving mobility. The anti-inflammatory properties of collagen also help reduce arthritis-related inflammation, easing pain and stiffness. Regular collagen intake has been shown to help slow the progression of joint degeneration in individuals with arthritis.

What’s the difference between bovine collagen and marine collagen?
There are key differences between bovine and marine collagen. Marine collagen, derived from fish skin, is generally better absorbed by the body than bovine collagen, which comes from cattle hides and bones. The extraction process for marine collagen is gentler, using hot water and enzymes, whereas bovine collagen often requires the use of harsh chemicals. Some concerns have been raised about potential chemical residues in bovine collagen products.

Is there a suitable vegan substitute for collagen?
As collagen is derived from animal sources, there is no direct vegan equivalent. However, there are vegan supplements that can help boost the body’s natural collagen production. These often contain Vitamin C and plant-based amino acids. While these supplements are helpful, they are not as effective as animal-derived collagen, as they lack the specific peptides found in collagen, which are crucial for its benefits.

How does the body process collagen when ingested?
When you ingest collagen, your digestive system breaks it down into peptides and amino acids, which are absorbed in the small intestine and distributed throughout the body via the bloodstream. These peptides stimulate fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen, helping to repair and maintain collagen in the skin, joints, bones, and other connective tissues. As we age, collagen becomes harder to digest, which is why taking hydrolysed collagen peptides is more effective.

Can you dispel a common misconception about collagen supplementation?
A common misconception is that liquid collagen is better absorbed than collagen powder. This is untrue, as liquid collagen is simply collagen powder dissolved in liquid. The absorption rate is the same whether the collagen is in liquid or powder form.

Can I take collagen while pregnant or breastfeeding, and are there any benefits in doing so?
Collagen is a natural protein and is generally regarded as safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but it’s always best to consult a doctor before taking any supplement. During pregnancy, collagen can support skin elasticity, reduce the likelihood of stretch marks, promote joint and bone health, and strengthen hair and nails, which can be affected by hormonal changes. Additionally, collagen can help with gut health and muscle mass maintenance, both of which are beneficial during and after pregnancy.

If you’re between the ages of 30 and 45, you might have noticed the first signs of fine lines, a slight loss of firmness, or perhaps a change in the texture, plumpness and clarity of your skin. While ageing is a natural process we will all experience, science has discovered a clever hack to help you maintain a youthful glow. Let us introduce you to a new investing trend we think you’ll love – collagen banking.

Let’s start with the science behind collagen

Collagen is a key player in the structure of our skin, acting as a scaffold that supports skin elasticity and hydration. This protein is abundant in our youth, providing the taut, dewy complexion we often take for granted. However, environmental factors like UV exposure, pollution, and lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol or a poor diet can accelerate collagen degradation. The visible effects include wrinkles, sagging, and a loss of that radiant glow.

What is collagen banking and how can it help me?

Collagen banking is the clever strategy of maintaining and boosting your body’s collagen levels before they start to decline significantly. Collagen is the structural protein that keeps our skin plump, firm, and smooth.  From our mid-twenties onwards, collagen production slows down, and by the time we hit our forties, we might have lost up to 30% of our natural collagen and up to 50% during our perimenopause and menopause years.

The concept of collagen banking has gone viral on TikTok, as skincare experts urge young women to invest in their skin early on and use the #collagenbank hashtag to discuss the best products.

Who’s talking about collagen banking?

“Collagen Banking” has garnered attention from many influencers and renowned beauty, wellness, and fitness experts around the globe, including dermatologists, longevity experts, celebrity trainers and numerous skincare and beauty influencers.

 The origins of collagen banking

The collagen banking trend is rooted in the broader wellness and anti-ageing movements that gained momentum in the early 2000s. As research into collagen’s benefits grew, particularly in dermatology and sports science, the concept of proactively maintaining collagen levels emerged. The term “collagen banking” started gaining popularity, aligning with the rise of holistic health approaches and preventative wellness.

Recent research highlights the benefits of collagen supplements and skin treatments that stimulate collagen production. According to a study published in the *Journal of Drugs in Dermatology*, women who took collagen supplements for eight weeks showed significant improvement in skin elasticity, moisture, and roughness compared to those who did not.

The benefits of collagen banking

By investing in your collagen levels now, you are essentially “banking” on a future of healthier, more resilient skin. Here’s what you can look forward to:

– Youthful Appearance: Reduced fine lines and wrinkles, giving your skin a smoother, more youthful look.

– Improved Skin Texture: Enhanced skin elasticity and hydration, resulting in a plump, dewy complexion.

– Stronger Hair and Nails: Collagen also benefits your hair and nails, making them stronger and more resilient.

– Joint Health: Collagen supports joint health, reducing stiffness and discomfort associated with ageing.

– Muscle Recovery and Strength: Collagen is essential for maintaining muscle mass and aiding in recovery post-exercise, which is crucial for staying active and fit.

– Gut health: Collagen improves the overall health of the gut, making it more effective at absorbing vital nutrition

– Bone Health: Collagen provides bone structure, and maintaining adequate levels can help towards the prevention of osteoporosis and fractures later in life.

– Overall Wellbeing: Feeling confident in your skin can positively impact your overall mental and emotional well-being.

How to bank your collagen for a better future you

Eat a Collagen-Rich Diet:

Consuming foods rich in collagen or supporting collagen production is an excellent first step. Bone broth, fish, chicken, egg whites, citrus fruits, berries, and leafy greens are great additions to your diet. These foods provide the amino acids and vitamins necessary for collagen synthesis. Just adding a good-quality collagen powder to your foods, such as a smoothie, can be a great start.

Invest in High-Quality Collagen Supplements:

Double hydrolysed collagen supplements are popular for their high bioavailability, meaning they are easily absorbed and utilised by the body. Regular intake can help replenish your body’s collagen stores, leading to firmer, more elastic skin. Correxiko marine collagen powder and marine collagen capsules can be incorporated into your daily routine.

Switch-Up Your Skincare Routine:

Skincare products containing retinoids, peptides, and vitamin C can boost collagen production. Retinoids stimulate cell turnover and collagen production, peptides signal your skin to produce more collagen, and vitamin C is crucial for collagen synthesis and offers antioxidant protection.

Dermatologist/Professional Treatments:

Dermatological procedures such as microneedling, laser therapy, and radiofrequency treatments are designed to stimulate collagen production deep within the skin. These treatments can effectively target signs of ageing and rejuvenate your skin.

Improve Lifestyle Choices

Protecting your skin from UV damage with good sunscreen, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and avoiding smoking are all crucial for maintaining collagen levels. Stress management through mindfulness, yoga, or other relaxation techniques also plays a significant role in skin health and overall wellness.

My introduction to collagen supplementation was through a desire to help improve my skin but it is the longevity benefits that have kept me hooked on this particular brand and here’s why…

As I approach my 40s I think more and more about how I can support my skin in a natural way. Our collagen production, the thing that keeps our skin looking firm and youthful, starts to dwindle in our late twenties and early thirties. But it’s when you start to reach your 40s that you really begin to see the effects of this. And as much as we all wish sometimes that we could apply a magic potion to our face that will result in smoother, younger looking skin – it’s actually much more important and effective to look at supplementing our collagen loss. Having reviewed a long list of different supplements (such is the benefit of being a wellness Editor) I started to work out exactly what I wanted from my own collagen supplement; effective; science-backed; sustainable; and easy to use. This is where Correxiko comes in.

Correxiko is sustainably sourced marine based collagen supplement, founded by a Gastroenterologist Doctor, Dr Dinuk, who witnessed the remarkable healing benefits in using collagen post-surgery. He created Correxiko after witnessing the amazing healing effects that taking collagen had on his patients’ recovery. He went in search of the perfect collagen to recommend but after much research couldn’t find anything at the standard that he would want for himself, his family or his patients. And so Correxiko was born. I now use it daily, adding it to either coffee or my morning smoothie. And, although I started taking collagen to help improve my skin, Dr Dinuk also explained to me the amazing benefits it also has on my body and how, especially for women entering perimenopause and menopause, it is essential for everything from my bones to my gut lining, and of course, my skin and hair too. Just a quick stat for you – women have around 50% less collagen post menopause than at the start of menopause.

What is Collagen

Collagen is our most common protein and is found throughout our bodies (it accounts for 30% of our body’s protein). It is super important when it comes to keeping our skin, hair, nails, joints, tendons, ligaments, bones, veins, arteries, heart, brain, liver, gut, healthy! We’re born with high amounts of collagen, which is why babies have such plump smooth skin, but as we age our body collagen levels naturally fall steadily every year. You can get collagen from foods like bone broth and chicken skin, but collagen supplements are a much more efficient way to get our collagen intake these days as we tend to not actually eat the parts of the animal that are rich in collagen anymore (ie the cartilage).

Collagen For Longevity + To Support and Active Lifestyle

Although I was drawn to try collagen to help fight the signs of aging, it is actually its longevity benefits that have meant that I would now never start a day without adding Correxiko’s collagen to my morning routine. I love to run and in order for my body to keep on running well into middle age I need to take care of my joints. Supplementing with collagen has been shown to help build muscle, repair tissue and fight joint inflammation, and even strengthen joints and ligaments as well as accelerating injury recovery time. One study in 2017 by the University of Freiburg, Department of Sport and Sport Science, Germany – evaluated the use of collagen peptides in reducing pain in athletes with functional knee problems during sport. And found that the supplementation of collagen peptides in young adults with functional knee problems led to a statistically significant improvement of activity-related joint pain. That’s all the evidence I need to make sure that I add two tablespoons of Correxiko’s powder to my morning smoothie! And that is not all, osteoporosis and reduced bone density is one of the leading causes of death in older women and is largely associated with the loss of oestrogen that has a severe impact on the strength of our bones. However, a study done by the Department of Nutrition in Florida State University showed compared postmenopausal women taking collagen peptides with calcium and Vitamin D, versus a control group with only calcium and Vitamin D. Evaluating results after one year showed the study group’s results support the addition of Collagen peptides in reducing bone loss in postmenopausal women.

How I Take My Collagen

I love to take my collagen in the morning with either my morning smoothie or coffee. The powder dissolves so easily in liquid, so I have also used it in herbal teas, lemon with water and soups, so there are plenty of options. If you have tried flavoured collagen before and have not enjoyed it, Correxiko’s collagen is free of artificial sweeteners, flavourings or sugar and doesn’t have any noticeable taste to it, which makes it super versatile and easy to add to just about anything. I actually really love it in my coffee as it makes it taste much smoother and slightly creamy, as I drink coffee every morning, it is such a hassle-free way to incorporate it into my usual morning routine.

My Smoothie Recipe:

1 banana

1 cup kale

1 cup blueberries

1 cup raspberries

(1 handful of any blackberries / goji berries / frozen wild blueberries I can get my hands on)

2 cups Plenish oat milk

2 tbsp Correxiko Collagen Powder

2 tbsp Form Nutrition

1 tsp Free Soul Greens

1 tbsp Flaxseed
